El Escollera
El Escollera
A tunnel, a rider, a few creative minds, and plenty of time to experiment. That's how this picture came about on La Palma, in a tunnel that's actually meant to protect the harbor from monster waves, hence the name El Escollera, which means "THE breakwater." Due to its unique location and construction, the tunnel offers constantly changing light scenarios from sunrise to sunset. Every minute, the light shifted, providing new opportunities to photograph the tunnel in a fresh light. For me, it was an exciting challenge to constantly reinvent myself and take the time to work on new perspectives. I hope I can go back there again because I already have new ideas for using this scenery for another sport. The idea for this picture was to have the rider on the edge of the light shadow, far enough away to be subtly suggested by the interplay of the elements, yet somehow brought back into focus by the shadow. I hope it worked, but I love the picture. By the way, there's a great second picture, which is essentially the bright counterpart to this one. It's called "Stairs to Heaven," check it out.
